The Challenge

For Ally Financial, customer experience is the business. With no physical branches, every interaction shapes how customers perceive and engage with the brand. That’s why Ally rallies its teams around a simple but demanding promise: Do It Right.

“Our mission reflects our commitment to being a true ally for the customers we serve each and every day,” says Allison Maupin, corporate communications manager at Ally Financial. That philosophy comes to life through Banksgiving, a holiday initiative that empowers frontline teams to turn everyday customer care interactions into moments of empathy, generosity, and human connection.

In its third edition of the campaign, Ally saw an opportunity to extend Banksgiving beyond the contact center and into the social media sphere. Their challenge was to preserve the campaign's authenticity in a fast-moving, highly visible environment where customer sentiment can shift quickly and every interaction plays out in public.

To scale the program effectively, Ally needed real-time insight into what customers were feeling, saying, and experiencing, along with the ability to respond quickly, thoughtfully and authentically across social channels.

The Solution

To bring Banksgiving to social channels, Ally needed a unified way to listen, engage and respond in real time while preserving the empathy and authenticity at the heart of the program.

Using Sprinklr Social, the team built an integrated ecosystem that connected social listening, engagement, surveys and analytics. With a unified view across social channels, the team could move quickly and scale personalized surprise-and-delight moments while maintaining consistent, customer-centric engagement.

Turning social listening into creative direction

Before launching Banksgiving, Ally used Social Listening to better understand the emotional landscape customers were navigating heading into the holidays. The team monitored sentiment, identified emerging themes and analyzed conversations in real time across social channels.

What they saw reinforced a key truth: holiday content that felt overly promotional or scripted wouldn’t resonate. To earn attention and trust, Ally needed to show up with empathy and restraint. These insights directly shaped the campaign’s creative direction.

“Rather than leading with brand messaging, we knew we needed to focus on real stories, genuine interactions and moments that reflected customers’ lived experiences,” explains Maupin. “The goal wasn’t to talk louder but to listen better and respond in a way that felt human.”

By grounding Banksgiving in real‑time social insight, Ally ensured the campaign felt emotionally relevant, socially native and authentic. This set the foundation for connection before a single message was published.

Reimagining the customer survey

At the heart of Banksgiving was a simple shift: turning a routine post‑call survey into a moment of human connection.

Ally flipped the traditional customer satisfaction survey on its head. Instead of asking customers to rate their experience, contact center teams invited them to answer open‑ended questions about what they were saving for, what was holding them back and what mattered most in their lives at that moment.

The responses were deeply personal — from a parent struggling to afford swim lessons for her child to a single mother navigating housing insecurity. Armed with these insights, Ally surprised and delighted participants with tailored support that addressed real needs. In this way, they turned feedback into meaningful action.

“If I had to describe the heart of Banksgiving, it would be humanity at its best,” says Maupin. “People are sharing their struggles and their dreams with us, and we’re able to turn that into something meaningful.”

With the core experience defined, the next challenge was scaling that same level of care to social channels.

Extending the experience to social — without losing authenticity

Ally used Sprinklr to expand Banksgiving from the contact center to social, where conversations move faster and authenticity is harder to earn.

Ally invited customers who engaged with Banksgiving content on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok to participate in the same open-ended survey through direct messages. This approach preserved the privacy, thoughtfulness, and one-to-one nature of the original experience while creating a seamless connection between offline and online engagement.

Throughout the campaign, ongoing social listening helped the team understand how sentiment was evolving, identify the stories that resonated most and adapt in real time.

As Banksgiving expanded across social channels, Ally focused on highlighting authentic customer experiences rather than polished brand messaging.

“When you show up in a way that feels genuine and puts the customer first, it resonates,” says Kaity Edelmann, senior manager of go-to-market strategy at Ally Financial.

The Outcome

What began as an effort to scale empathy without losing authenticity became one of Ally’s most impactful social initiatives. It reinforced trust with customers and pride across the organization.

Over the course of the campaign, Ally saw meaningful momentum across its social presence:

  • 35M+ social impressions
  • 17M video views
  • 26% growth in TikTok followers, surpassing the 100K milestone

But the results went far beyond social reach. Customers engaged emotionally with the content, sharing their own stories and amplifying Banksgiving organically. This surge in user‑generated content reflected something deeper than visibility — it reflected real connection.

This showed up clearly in sentiment metrics. Banksgiving achieved 98% positive or neutral sentiment, tying the highest score in the bank’s history. Customers didn’t just react to the campaign; many used it as an opportunity to share why they bank with Ally and what allyship means to them personally.

Internally, the impact was just as significant. Banksgiving brought together teams across marketing, social, public relations and customer care around a shared purpose. Frontline employees — central to delivering these moments of care — saw their work reflected and valued, reinforcing Ally’s culture of empathy in action.

The success of Banksgiving also reshaped how Ally approaches engagement moving forward. The holiday initiative demonstrated more broadly how insight‑driven empathy can scale, leading the team to embed surveys, social listening and surprise‑and‑delight moments into its ongoing community management strategy.

For Ally, recognition like the 2025 CXUnifier Sprinklr for Good award affirmed the work — but it wasn’t the measure of success.

“We aren’t just a bank — we’re an ally,” says Allison Maupin. “And Banksgiving showed what that truly means.”
