5 Reasons for You to Start Optimizing for AEO

August 3, 20267 MIN READ

What one week inside an AI-visibility dashboard taught us about how brands get discovered now

40.9%. That's how often Gemini mentions Sprinklr when answering customer experience questions. On ChatGPT, the same brand, the same week, the same content — 12.72%.

Same company. Wildly different realities, depending on which AI your buyer happens to ask.

That gap is why answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) have come up on every CX leader’s radar. Your buyers aren't just using Google to search anymore. They've turned to LLMs. And these AI models — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity — don't dish out ten blue links. They pick a handful of sources, synthesize one answer, and name a few brands. You're either in that answer or you don't exist.

In this piece, I'm not going to hand you recycled predictions. I'm sharing what we actually saw inside a third-party AEO tracking tool — real visibility scores, real citation data, real week-over-week swings — plus what our in-house SEO Director told me when I grilled them about what's working.

Let's start with a quick self-check.

Quiz #1: When an AI engine answers "what are the best customer experience platforms," which source type does it cite most?

A) The brand's own website

B) Analyst and third-party industry sites

C) News coverage

D) Community forums

(Take a guess. Answer coming up in Reason #2.)

Reason 1: Your buyers are asking AI — and AI has already made up its mind about you

Here's the hard, cold truth: AI engines are forming opinions about your brand whether you're tracking them or not.

When we started measuring, our overall brand visibility across AI-generated answers sat at 24.92% — meaning roughly one in four relevant AI answers mentioned us at all.

And the spread across engines was dramatic: 40.9% on Gemini, 34.54% on Perplexity, 12.72% on ChatGPT in the same week.

Think about what that means for your funnel. A CFO researching "unified customer experience platforms for global enterprises" on one engine might hear your name confidently. On another, you're invisible. You wouldn't accept that inconsistency in your paid media. Why accept it in the channel where your buyers now start their research?

Reason 2: Third-party content decides your fate more than your own website does

Time to settle Quiz #1. The answer is B — and it isn't close.

In our citation data for the week, the most-referenced domain in AI answers about our category wasn't ours. It was gartner.com, cited 173 times. Our own site? 117 citations. A competitor's site clocked 102. Independent industry publications and peer blogs filled most of the rest.

And when we broke citations down by channel, earned and peer content dominated the mixowned content was a thin slice of the pie. The top-cited individual URLs? Almost all listicles and comparison guides on third-party sites, several of which mention our competitors and not us.

This is the AEO equivalent of off-page SEO, and when I asked our SEO Director what the single non-negotiable is, their reply was rather straightforward: brand perception and brand placements across the internet. What the web says about you needs to be corrected, current, and in sync with what your brand wants to say.

You can't write your way into AI answers from your own blog alone. You got to earn your way in.

Reason 3: The scoreboard has changed — from rankings to citations

SEO gave us a comforting ritual: publish, check the SERP, celebrate page one.

AEO breaks that ritual. There is no page one. So, what do you measure instead? Two things, according to our in-house SEO expert: whether your page gets cited against a target prompt, and whether your brand gets named inside the answer itself. The second one, in their words, is the gold mine.

And here's what makes this genuinely exciting for marketers: it moves fast. In a single week, our visibility on the prompt "Which customer experience platform combines marketing, service, and social channels?" jumped 75%. Another enterprise-focused prompt: +75%. A third: +70.83%.

Weekly swings like that simply don't happen in SEO, where you wait months for a ranking to budge. In AEO, the feedback loop is tight enough to run experiments — which means the brands experimenting now are learning at a pace laggards won't be able to buy back later.

Quiz #2: Which content format showed up most among the top-cited URLs in our category?

A) Long-form whitepapers

B) Product pages

C) Listicles and comparison guides

D) Press releases

Answer: C. Four of our top five cited URLs were listicles or guides. AI engines love structured, scannable, directly comparative content.

Reason 4: Your old SEO playbook won't just underperform — parts of it will backfire

Every platform shift tempts marketers to brute-force it. Resist.

As our SEO expert put it, LLMs and modern search algorithms understand context far too well now — this is not the 2000s. Flooding Reddit and Quora with brand content can be risky. Yes, forums are heavily cited by AI engines. But brands bombarding communities to manufacture influence are getting flagged, and their assessment was that it might backfire later.

What actually works reads like a craftsmanship checklist: clean technical SEO foundations, schemas and structured content formats, TL;DR summaries, and the BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front) framework. Precise answers instead of running around the bush. Product mentions placed contextually, not crowbarred in.

Notice the pattern? Everything that helps an AI engine confidently extract and attribute an answer helps you. AEO doesn't reward louder brands. It rewards clearer ones.

Reason 5: Share of voice is being carved up right now — and it compounds

The part that should genuinely worry you: this land grab has a leaderboard, and it's already forming.

In our competitive tracking for one week, share of voice in AI answers across our category looked like this: the leader held 23%, the next challenger 18%, us at 15%, with others trailing at 12% and 10%.

Meanwhile, our owned-mention share of voice measured 18.59% — up from a standing start of zero once we began actively tracking and optimizing.

Why does early position matter so much here? Because AI visibility feeds itself. Brands cited often become part of the "consensus" these engines learn to repeat. The rich get cited. The cited get richer.

Every week you wait, someone else's name gets rehearsed into the answer your buyer will eventually base their decision on.

What this means for you

If you lead marketing at a large enterprise, here are three takeaways:

1. Start measuring before you start optimizing. You cannot fix a visibility problem you've never quantified. Track your brand across at least ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity against the prompts your buyers actually ask — not just your keyword list. Prompt and topic-cluster dominance is the new ranking report.

2. Rebalance owned vs. earned. If analyst sites, listicles, and peer publications are out-citing your own domain (they almost certainly are), your PR, analyst relations, and content teams need one shared AEO scoreboard. Getting featured in the right third-party comparison guide may now outperform publishing three more blogs.

3. Restructure before you re-write. BLUF openings, schema markup, extractable FAQs, precise self-contained answers. Most enterprises don't need more content to win at AEO. They need their existing content to punch above its weight.

For twenty years, marketing fought to be found. The next decade is about being believed — by machines that millions of your buyers now trust to do their thinking and help with decision-making. With AI engines answering your prospects’ questions, the only question left is whether you're part of the answer.

Final quiz:

A note on the data presented in this blog: These numbers come from one week of tracking Sprinklr's category — customer experience platform — through a beta AEO tool, against a defined set of prompts. Treat them as a vivid snapshot, not a longitudinal study — the direction of the signals matters more than any single decimal. If anything, that's the strongest argument for starting your own measurement: the only AI-visibility data that should drive your strategy is yours.
